How a Small Patch Delivered $3.6 Billion: The Untold Story of NBA Jersey Sponsorships

June 24, 2025

By Bob Lynch

The San Antonio Spurs just announced Ledger as their new jersey patch sponsor, but for the NBA, it's a $3.63 billion-dollar patch.

Here's the story—and the math—behind it.

When the NBA first started discussing the prospect of a jersey patch 15 years ago, there were concerns that it would actually diminish the value of the league by creating greater visual clutter.

And who could blame them? Major U.S. pro sports team values at that time were still growing significantly while keeping their jerseys clean. So why mess up a good thing? Inertia has an amazing effect on change!

But nearly 10 years ago, the NBA decided to officially move forward with a pilot to allow jersey patches—and that decision may be one of the most quietly valuable moves in league history.

Over the lifetime of the program, 90% of patch inventory has been sold, and not just to a handful of industries.

In fact, 46 unique categories have been represented from 62 (now 63) different companies.

Some teams have stayed exclusive (5 teams—the Golden State Warriors, Phoenix Suns, Oklahoma City Thunder, Orlando Magic and Toronto Raptors have only had one partner), while a full ⅓ of teams (11 of 30) have cycled through 3 or more partners in 8 years.

Today, average deals exceed $9M annually, with a few deals north of $20M.

So what does this mean in terms of value for the league?

Recent NBA team value-to-revenue multiples have commanded between 12–13x total revenues. When taking into consideration the total annual revenues from jersey patches, it means that this one asset—initially approved as a pilot—now brings approximately $3.63 billion of enterprise value to the collective teams in the NBA.

At SponsorUnited, we’re not just tracking the surface. We analyze the underlying value of sponsorship assets across leagues, categories, and geographies—offering brand marketers insights that help them spot opportunity, benchmark effectively, and activate more strategically.

The jersey patch evolution is a powerful case study in how a single asset can redefine an entire league’s commercial narrative. And as the NBA continues to expand globally, while live sports and player IP rise in value, the sponsorship story is only just beginning.
